Dancing “out” the maypole
(Dunakiliti,May 2024,for Népszava)
On the last evening of May 2024, a special event takes place in Dunakiliti. Young and old, from near and far - even from India and Afghanistan - gather in Kisfaludy Street to dance the Maypole. Everyone brings a snack, and according to Marika, the event's mastermind, the revived tradition is more about strengthening the community.
Singing and holding hands, they stand around the tree, then Ali, who arrived from Afghanistan in 2009, takes down the plaque and the men, led by Józsi, lay the trunk. The openness of the community builds bridges between cultures. Thus Ali is present with his family, as well as Gurpreet and Pavi, who came from India. They participate with an ease in the traditions, while the locals welcome them with honest friendship.
In the Kisfaludy Street the preparations are underway.
A family is arriving.
